Why does the bible say magic is evil?
I am a Christian and my best friend is Pagan. She is a good person and has never done anything evil. I enjoying learning about her religion, but out of love for my god I do not practice it. I'm confused as to why the bible says magic is evil though. Clearly there was some kind of magic in the bible. The Nile turned to blood, Moses turned his staff into a snake, Jesus made water into wine. There's tons of script in the bible that talks about magic. So why is it 'evil' for us to do it? And some magic (if not all, I'm not incredibly educated about wiccans and pagans, etc. Sorry!) is derived from natural energy. Which God created, right? Confused! Some one help me!
morganmccaine gave the best answer, but did not answer fully, I feel, or at least from a Christian standpoint.
As some other answers made clear, magic per se is *not* spoken against in the bible, though astrology, dream interpretation and other forms of "fortune telling" (apart from a true prophet of God) are.
The bottom line is: God *demands* our worship be directed to him alone. There is only one supernatural *anything* (being, substance, law, etc.) that we Christians are permitted to rely on, and that is God. To follow any other teaching, any other God, or any other belief *that is religious* is contrary to God. For example, this does not mean that you should ignore science, or philosophy, or any of a number of *intellectual* subjects. However, to put your *religious faith* in something other than God is wrong.
It is true that, from an *observational* point of view, the miracles of the Exodus were magical. However, each and every one of those came from God and God alone. *That* is why those are OK, and others are not.
As for so-called "natural energy", if the "miracles" performed are *truly* derived from "natural energy" (light, gravity, heat, etc.), then the only thing wrong is deceiving someone into thinking that they are miraculous or magical. If this so-called "natural energy" is what scientists would term "supernatural", then *only* if *full* credit is given to God, and *only* to God, are "works" performed by this means permissible to a Christian. Personally, I have never seen nor heard of anyone performing true "miracles" without the power of God except for the Pharaoh's magicians in Exodus. I believe that if such occurred, there would be scientific (i.e. observable) evidence of such. Therefore, I believe that all modern "witchcraft" or "sorcery" is pure charlatanism, and all of this "magic" is either the result of natural (and well-understood) processes performed under the guise of magic, or simply pure deception.
