Why you need to change the way you think about Worlds Best Practice

Edison is quoted as saying that “Opportunity is missed by most people because it comes dressed in overalls and looks like work.” In his day, and still today, this is quite apt, however if I may be so bold as to add, “…dressed in overalls and looks like somebody else’s work.”

Worlds Best Practice, conjures up a myriad of images in the mind. Images of excellence, performance, results achieved, expectations met, a hard task but well worth the results. Take a moment to consider what it is that you think about Worlds Best Practice. Make a short note of it on a piece of paper.

Now for the really probing question; How did you come to think that? whatever that is. Were you part of an implementation, lead a team through, did you work for an organisation that had already attained the status, or from reading books and articles. In the same way we tend to create an image of a person based upon their voice over the phone, our mind creates imagery of concepts and what they mean.

Coming from an operational background with a focus around manufacturing my first contact with Worlds Best Practice can be summed up in a very simple equation. What do we have, what do we need, what shall we get. Have, Need, Get. It is the fundamental calculation at the heart of every Enterprise Resource Planning System I am aware of, often presented as the Material Replenishment Planning (MRP II, DRP, and even production scheduling concepts such as RCCP (though purists may argue with me)).

Pretty simple, right?!>[?{}(!>?{. To be honest the concept is quite simple, but just because the underlying concept may seem simple, it certainly does not follow that the process of implementation is neither, easy, quick or simple.

Worlds Best Practice is often seen as the Holy Grail, a mystical, hard to achieve and near impossible to maintain process of operations. This belief, coupled with the confusion of “simple concept = simple to implement” confusion as described above, are the two forces that result in the less than satisfactory results often seen and if you bare with me a moment here’s why.

There is a theory in physics that describes a chaotic system; consider a pendulum, a very predictable body, swinging back and forth, however where there are three or more independent bodies in a closed environment, it is difficult to predict the results. I have published a short video on Youtube that shows 3 pendulums (very predictable individually) linked to one another. Start the machine in motion and … chaos. Not quite but get the idea http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3g_eUeKH_Q

So why do you need to change the way you think about Worlds Best Practice? Worlds Best Practice is a simple and logical concept, Generation Y live a breath computer logic, they expect logic to be ever present in all parts of their life, including work. If you provide them with an illogical working environment, one which creates the same sub optimal results because the behaviors are repeated, leading to frustration, they will walk right out your door. You need to change the way you think, not necessarily what you think (though you might find both have already shifted a little), to ensure your organisation sees the next decade out.
