Punta Del Este Sunset: The Sunset Series, Volume 1 Punta Del Este Sunset: The Sunset Series, Volume 1

Punta del Este Sunset is part of a series of ambient mix discs inspired by rave locations around the world, this one being Punta del Esta, Uruguay. Mixed live by A Man Called Adam, Sunset takes a global approach to ambient music with a pop tinge. Issa Bagayogo weaves an African trance, while the Beta Band affects a pastoral brand of acoustic pop. Beta Band's inclusion in this usually all-electronic domain speaks to A Man Called Adam's willful eclecticism, which on this album also includes Luscious Jackson. Pushing the envelope of ambient chill, AMCA holds them together with seamless segues that break down superficial barriers. They take us from Branda Fassia's joyous African techno chant, "Vuli n' Delia," to John Beltran's tapped bass, digital delay foray, "Collage of Dreams," and AMCA's own "Steady" with its world-weary vocal. Punta del Este has dramatic, if languid, arc: a torrid day burning into a sultry night. --John Diliberto
