Costa de Azahar in Summer: Peñiscola

Along the Costa de Azahar in the province of Castellon in Spain rests the picturesque city of Peñiscola. The city sits on a peninsula and is bordered on three sides by the clear blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea. This beautiful city can be visited by spending the night in a great Costa de Azahar Hotel.

The dominant image of the city is the Papa Luna castle, named for Pope Benedict who was known as the “Moon Pope†and in the 13th century, chose to barricade himself in the castle as he fought for unity among the followers of the Catholic Faith. The views from the castle are awe-inspiring and it is now the home of a renowned music festival that celebrates the compositional beauty of the era between the 12th and 17th centuries. It is totally worth it to combine visiting this amazing music festival with a Costa de Azahar holiday.

In the first two weeks of August, the festival showcases various talents during open-air concerts in the pristine setting of the castle’s patio arms. This wonderful event takes listeners back in time to a sweeping era where music was complex in its composition, yet played on the simplest of instruments. These modern day musicians are truly the keepers of an ancient tradition and the festival is not to be missed.

To celebrate the arrival of summer, Peñiscola recently created a festival in late June to honour the endless nights of the season. Themes of magic and witchcraft are carried on throughout this celebration and visitors are invited to soak up the night sky through astronomy. The week long event culminates with a presentation known as Culture Fire or Saint John’s Eve, that recreates the relationship between the human world and fire in various cultures. A variety of ancient rituals and traditions are showcased through shamanism and magic before a backdrop of five massive bonfires. Thousands of revelers take part in the event.

July in Peniscola brings the arrival of the International Jazz Festival, which features musicians from around the world to play open-air concerts throughout the city. Numerous exhibitions and seminars all focused on Jazz take place throughout the week.

Music and art seem to dominate this lovely city throughout the year, but the summer nights seem to pay particular homage to this tradition.  Of course, throughout the summer months, the fine beaches and the bountiful local foods help make Peñiscola an ideal vacation spot. The city offers plenty of Costa de Azahar accommodations for every visitor.
